Once in a while, I receive emails from young people.
Some of them say they want to play music for God.
Some of them say they want to come to Japan and work for God here in Japan.
It's a great thing.
I'm really glad and happy about them saying that.
To be honest, I don't reply all those emails.
That's because I'm just a human and sometimes I'm too busy or lazy.
However today, something told me to do it differently.
Also I had a few hours before leaving for an acoustic gig.
So I wrote this "reply" and "advice" for young people who are willing to play music for Jesus, and work in Japan.

Dear young friend in Christ,
(First of all, sorry if my english is not good enough.)
This is Tak from Imari Tones.
Thank you for the message.
First I'm really glad you believe in Jesus and His plan to save us all.
I'm really glad you are willing to devote yourself to God and play music for Him.
Once in a while I receive email like yours.
Generally, I used to write a generic reply, such as "Great. Go ahead and chase your dream. God bless." or something like that.
That is because you are not my closest friend, or we are not talking in person face to face. (I don't believe very much in Email/Facebook kind of internet talking.)
Or simply because I'm too busy. (Not because I'm a musician but it's just everyone is busy with his/her life struggles.)
And most importantly, because my English skill was not good enough to talk about such a deep issue.
If you are Japanese and we are talking in Japanese language (which, naturally, I'm much better at) and if we are talking face to face, I would probably give much different answer and advice.
But, I think my English is now a bit better. And Today I have some time to write. Also I feel I should give some more "sincere" advice to young people like you.
So I think today I will give you some more realistic advice, just like I would give to a close friend in Japan.
Before giving any advice, please remember we are not a successful band or anything. We are not famous or commercially successful. We are just another independent band based in Japan. But we are doing it for a while now, while other bands have quit long ago. So I guess it would be a some realistic advice.
1: Playing music general.
If I talk to a young Japanese friend who is wanting to start playing music and "become a rock musician" (or anything), the first advice I would always give to them is "Don't".
It may sound a little harsh. But I think that is the most kind advice in rock music.
Because playing music, being in a band, live a life of musician, is a tough thing.
There is not a big chance of being successful.
Your relationship with family and friends will be more difficult.
Most likely you will have financially problems many times in life.
Instead of singing about problems in the world, most certainly YOU will become a problem in other people's life.
Especially, in this day and age, music industry is shrinking and there is virtually no hope for making a living from music. There is no "dream" out there.
In a nutshell, your life will be much easier and happier if you are not in a band.
Also remember, playing music/being in a band is a DIRTY JOB.
It's not clean or pretty at all.
I don't go so far to explaining what "dirty" means here, but it's TOUGH. It's DIRTY, and it's a LABOR.
It takes time. A long long time. You have to sacrifice many things. MANY MANY THINGS.
Is it all worth?
MOST LIKELY NOT.
Chances are, you will have a much better life if you are not in a band and that's why I say this sincere advice "Don't" to my young friends. It's not a recommendable life to be a musician.
Here is the important truth.
Musician is a not something you want to become.
Musician is a life you have to choose because there is no other choice for him/her to choose. It is not a happy life. It is a tragedy. (If you ask, musician is a people who can still smile in that tragedy.)
Did I want to be a musician when I was a teenager?
Was my dream to become a rock musician when I was young?
No. My dream was to become a lawyer.
My dream was to be a decent person who can solve problems in life.
(Instead, I have become a problem myself, haha.)
It means, I had something in life that forced me to give up on my dream.
It was a really hard thing.
And the only thing left in my life was to make music.
I started doing this because I had no other choice left.
It was actually, a sad thing.
Now, if you ARE a real musician, you will end up doing it no matter how hard you try to quit.
And, if you ARE a real musician, you have started doing it EVEN BEFORE you know it.
I was born in a music family. My mother was a piano teacher and my father was singing in a chorus group as he worked for a bank. My sister went to a music college and is now a piano teacher, too.
So you are now 19 and how many songs have you written so far?
I have written about 150 songs by the age 19 and recorded 80 songs demo out of them. (Even though recording equipment back then was much worse than today.)
So, here is what you call "Fair Warning" in English language.
I just gave it to you.
It is a DIRTY JOB.
It is NOT a happy life.
Now you have heard that.
If you think you still go for that in spite of all these thing I just said, well then, It's your choice.
Just like I said, if you are a REAL musician, you will end up doing it no matter how hard you try NOT to.
Please remember. Sooner you quit, the happier you are. I have met so many "band friends" in my journey. Sooner they quit playing music, the happier they will be. This applied to all of my past friends.
2: About Playing Christian Music
Now all those advices I wrote above were about playing music general. It applies whether you are a Christian musician or not.
Now here is my advice about playing Christian music.
Before that, please remember. This is not about "being a worship leader in a church" or something like that. That's really different and I don't know much about what it looks like to be a church musician, USA or any other country.
It is about "to form a Christian band and play in music world out there" thing.
Now, even if you have faith in Christ and you are going to play music for Jesus, my advice is the same: "Don't".
That's not only because of all things I have said above, but also because of two additional reasons.
1. Your faith is NOT strong enough.
2. Your music is NOT good enough.
You say you are wanting to do this, not for your own sake, but for Jesus?
You say you are watching Jesus and not watching your own fame&success?
No. You ARE watching your own fame and success. YES YOU ARE.
That's why we have SIN and that's why WE need Jesus in the first place.
Don't forget you are sinful.
Don't assume you are clean or special just because you are Christian.
You are as dirty as any secular musician and you have to know that.
You are no different than any other musician.
If you don't know this, your so called faith will become your WEAKNESS instead of strength.
If you say you want to play music for Jesus even if you are sinful, dirty, and occasionally caring your own fame, well then, it's your choice.
You say your faith is strong?
No it's not.
Because you are expecting something special for being a Christian musician.
You will have some support from churches?
No, you won't.
Will they applaud because you are playing music for God?
No, they won't.
If they do, trust me, you are doing it somewhat wrong. You have to be careful about that. (Churches/Christians)
You play music for God because you have a support from church and people applaud?
No. God doesn't like that.
When you play music for God even though you have no suport from churches/Christians, then maybe God will like it more.
I think we will all have this kind of "test" from God.
Remember. Your faith will be tested. Many times.
Now those secular (I say "regular") musicians out there. They know they aren't saints. They know they are "bastards". They have a shabby life. They won't have support from anyone. Still they keep playing music. It means, their faith in music is stronger than yours.
So if you say your FAITH (both in God&Music) is stronger than any other "regular" musician, then go ahead and play Christian music!
About music.
Music is the most important thing, if you are a musician? Am I wrong?
But in the Christian world, they often say it differently. And I don't think that's good.
Matthew 7:16 says "You will know them by their fruits" (Maybe look at Matt 7:15-20)
What is the fruit for musicians? It's the MUSIC.
So if you are a Christian musician, you have to produce BETTER music.
Do you think Christian Music is better than "Secular" music?
I think that's what it is supposed to be.
Because "Christians" are supposed to be more rich in spirit.
But the reality is different.
I'm not going to say all the secular music is good.
But in "Secular/Regular" music world they have "more innovative" styles, "newer" things, better song writing, better sound, better shows and simply better quality.
This is NOT good.
I think it's because our FAITH is NOT strong enough.
We, started as a "regular" Japanese hard rock band, became a Christian rock band after a long musical journey.
We didn't become a Christian band because we thought it would open a career opportunity for us. We didn't.
We became a Christian band because we felt it would open up a whole new MUSICAL possibility.
It was a MUSICAL reason.
We did it because we felt it would guide us to a higher musical level.
And we were right. Christian Faith did gave us a whole new dimension to our music. (Whether you agree or not.)
We just wanted to play a good music, a BETTER music. NEWER music.
We still do.
That's all for us and we wouldn't have started playing Christian Rock if we didn't feel that was MUSICALLY cool.
I mean, how do you play BETTER guitar riffs than Jimmy Page and Eddie Van Halen?
It looks like almost impossible.
But you say nothing is impossible with God?
Then prove it!
I think THAT is the meaning of Christian Rock.
Have you ever felt we are only allowed to play "U2 style chime and delay" guitars at church and Christian music world?
If so, something is wrong.
We are supposed to be "more free in spirit" than secular musicians.
But in reality things are opposite.
If so, I think maybe Christian Faith is mistaken by many people.
If you want to start a "Christian Rock Band", you have to be better and more innovative than "regular" musicians.
You have to have more "freedom in spirit" than regular musicians.
If you are only going to play "some generic style of music" and write some lyrics including the word "Jesus", please not. PLEASE NOT. Because it does more bad than good.
If you say you can play "BETTER", "NEWER", "UNHEARD OF", "the BEST of BEST" music, then go ahead and do that.
I think there is no point of playing Christian music if you can't play BETTER music than regular music.
Rock is dead?
Well, I don't think so.
Because God is Rock and God is ALIVE.
Who else other than Christian Rockers can say that?
3: Playing Music in Japan
Just like I said, this is not my first time receiving email like yours.
Not necessarily about "playing music for God" but also "I wanna work for God in Japan" kind of messages and emails.
I'm not going to say every week, not every month. But let me say every couple of months I receive this kind of messages somewhere on internet.
It is a good thing. It is GREAT actually. I'm really happy that you have this passion and love for our country Japan.
But my advice here is the same. "Don't".
The reasons are mostly the same as those advices for musicians above.
Because it is TOUGHER than you think.
and...Because your FAITH is NOT strong enough.
Spreading Gospel in Japan is more difficult than you think.
This is the one of the most desperate war ground for Christian missionaries.
If you are not prepared, don't come at all.
(and, just like musical calling, if you are really called by God, you will end up being here no matter how hard you try to avoid.)
Thing is, spreading Gospel in Japan is almost as difficult as becoming a rock star.
People won't listen.
It is a dirty job.
You won't have a support.
You will have financial problems.
You will ask yourself "Why am I doing this?"
It's not like people don't listen at all, or it's not like people don't understand the story of Jesus. But it's a problem BEFORE those things. It's called Social and Cultural Background. So, don't ever try to apply YOUR Christianity to those Japanese people. It just doesn't fit. Instead, try and help Japanese people to find the style of Christianity that fits to their Japanese life, just like finding the right size of the dress.
One of my advices here is, have a respect for Japanese people and Japanese culture.
Don't assume you are better just because you know Jesus.
You are no better than anyone. You are a sinner just like Japanese people are.
Don't try to teach them.
Learn from them.
Become a friend.
Most likely you will find some kind of GODLY HEART in Japanese people, which you haven't seen in any other place. I think that's the key to Christianity in Japan.
I don't know. I'm getting really emotional and passionate as I write this.
Sorry if I lost my point.
But well, if you say you want to play music in Japan, form a band in Japan, it's great.
My advice here will be, first just try to "make a life" here before trying to start playing music.
Get a job here. Know people. Know culture. Make friends. Make yourself "rooted" in this place. Live a life. Then after that, you can start a band.
I think Japan is not a "very friendly" place to foreigners.
I mean, people are generally nice, but the government and immigration laws and systems, I heard they are "not very open". So here you will have a visa issue and whether you can stay in Japan, how long you can stay in Japan, God only knows. Get married to a Japanese girl/boy? Well, a good idea. But is that really a life you want?
Also finding band members is always difficult. We all struggle about it. People start a band real easy. People quit a band real easy. It all happens. So if you ask me "How can I find the band members in Japan?", I don't have a clue.
But yes, if you come to Japan, yes we can have a cup of tea, talk face to face and I can give you an advice or two. Also I can introduce you to some churches and pastors, as well as to my Christian friends.
Don't forget I'm also another just regular person. Not a rock star. I have my own life struggle and not always free.
But if you understand that, I will be happy to see you and help you.
Another "Fair Warning" about playing music in Japan is, things are very different from USA.
I think it takes much more money to play music here.
In USA you often practice in someone's garage, but here in Japan we don't have that kind of place. (You will know it when you come here.) You will have to use some expensive rehearsal rooms.
Or, in USA you will play a gig at a bar and you will get some kind of (even if small) money. But in Japan, most music venues are expensive "Pay To Play" places. That's just the way things are. You will have to, for example, $200-400 to the venue every time you play a 30 minutes gig unless you already have a big following. So usually it's not like "Let's play a gig every weekend."
Recently things are changing little by little, thanks to the good spirited independent musicians like us, but please remember music situation is much different than in USA/Europe in many ways.
4: Idol Trap
Lastly,
this is my most important advice about playing music for God.
Please make sure you are playing your music for God, and Love.
Don't play your music for an idol.
I mean, it's really easy to play music for an idol.
I think many people are doing it without knowing it themselves.
When you say "God" and "Love", is that really God?
Or is it just a signboard that says "God" and "Love"?
If it's just a signboard/symbol kind of thing, it is a thing called "idol".
As you know, it is a sin to worship an idol.
(I remember one of my friends called it "Plastic Jesus".)
So please be careful and make sure you are singing for real God. Not some plastic one.
Okay.

まず最初に、君がイエス・キリストを信じていて、僕たち皆を救うための神の計画について信じていることについて嬉しく思います。
そして君が自分の身を神に捧げて、神のために音楽をやろうとしていることに対して嬉しく思います。
時折、僕はこのようなメールをもらうことがあります。
普段は、たとえば「素晴らしい。がんばって自分の夢を追いかけなさい。神の祝福があるように。」などと、当たり障りの無い返事を書くことが多いのです。
それはなぜかというと、君は僕の親しい友人というわけではないし、また面と向かって話しているわけでもないからです。(僕はメールやFacebookなどのインターネットのコミュニケーションはあまり信じていません)
あるいは単純に忙しかったりするときもあります。(別にミュージシャンだからということではなく、人間は誰でも人生のいろいろなことで忙しいからです。)
そしていちばん大きな理由として、僕の英語の能力が十分でなく、このような深い話題について語ることができないからです。
もし君が日本人で、僕たちが日本語で話しているのであれば(もちろん僕は日本語の方がずっと得意です)、そして面と向かって直接話しているのであれば、僕はきっと、また違った回答やアドバイスをするでしょう。
けれども、僕の英語も少しはましになりました。そして、今日は僕は少しばかり書く時間があります。そしてまた、僕は君のような若い人たちに対して、より誠実なアドバイスをした方がいいと思いました。
なので、今日は僕は、たとえば日本の友人にするのと同じような感じで、より現実的なアドバイスをしようと思います。
アドバイスを言う前に、覚えておいて欲しいのは、僕たちは別に成功しているバンドでも何でもないということです。僕たちは有名でもなければ、商業的にも成功していない。僕たちはただの日本のインディーバンドのひとつです。けれども、僕たちは、たくさんのバンドが止めてしまったりする中で、わりあいと長いこと続けてこれているので、ある程度現実的なアドバイスができるのではないかと思っています。
1: 音楽を演奏すること全般について
もし僕が、音楽を初めてロックミュージシャン(あるいはそのような何か)になりたいと言う日本の若い友人と話すとしたら、僕はいつも最初にこういうアドバイスをするようにしています。「やめておけ」
ちょっとひどい言葉のように思うかもしれません。けれども、これはロックの世界でいちばん親切なアドバイスだと思います。
なぜなら、音楽をやって、バンドをやって、ミュージシャンとしての人生をやることは、とても大変なことだからです。
成功するチャンスなんてぜんぜんありません。
家族や友人との関係も難しいものになります。
人生の中で、経済的な問題も何度となく直面するでしょう。
あなたは世界の中の問題について歌う代わりに、あなた自身が他の人たちの人生における問題になるでしょう。
特に、最近の時代では、音楽業界はどんどん衰退しており、音楽を通じて食べていける可能性はほとんど無いと言っていいと思います。「夢」みたいなものは、ぜんぜん無いのです。
てっとりばやく言えば、バンドなんてやらない方が、人生は楽しいのです。
そして覚えておいて欲しいのが、音楽をやる、バンドをやる、ということは「汚い仕事」なのです。
まったく、きれいでも、華やかでもありません。
どういうふうに「汚い」のか、わざわざ説明しませんが、それは大変だし、汚いし、そして疲れる労働です。
時間もかかります。とても長い時間がかかります。そしてとてもたくさんのものを犠牲にしなければいけません。とても、とてもたくさんのものです。
そして、それだけの苦労をする価値があるでしょうか。
おそらく、ありません。
多くの場合、バンドなんてやらない方が、より良い人生を送ることができるのです。それが、僕が若い友人に対して「やめておけ」と心からのアドバイスを送る理由です。音楽をやるなんてことは、人に勧められる人生ではないのです。
そしてここに重要な真実があります。
ミュージシャンというものは、望んでなるものではないのです。
ミュージシャンというのは、他に選択肢のない人が、仕方なく選ぶものなのです。
それは決して幸せなことではなく、どちらかといえば悲劇です。
(もし問うのであれば、ミュージシャンというのは、そうした悲劇の中でも笑うことができる人たちのことです。)
僕はティーンエイジャーだった頃、ミュージシャンになりたいと思っていたでしょうか。
若い頃、僕の夢はロックミュージシャンになることだったでしょうか。
違います。
僕の夢は法律家になることでした。(正確には検事になるのが夢でした。)
僕の夢は、きちんとした人間になって、人々の人生の問題を解決してあげられる人間になることだったのです。
(そのかわりに、今では自分自身が社会の中の問題になりました、ははは。)
それはつまり、僕の人生の中で、夢をあきらめなければいけないような何かが起きた、ということです。それは辛いことでした。
そして、唯一残ったものが、音楽を作ることだったのです。
僕は、他に残った選択肢が無かったから、音楽を作り始めたのです。
それは実際のところ、結構悲しいことでした。
もし、君が本物のミュージシャンであるのであれば、どれだけそれを自分で止めようとしても、結局君は音楽を作るでしょう。
そして、君が本物のミュージシャンであるのであれば、自分でもそうと知らないうちに、音楽を作ることを始めているでしょう。
僕は音楽一家の中で育ちました。僕の母親はピアノ教師で、父親は銀行に勤めながらも合唱団で歌い続けていました。妹も音大に行き、ピアノ教師になりました。
君は今19歳だということですが、今までに何曲の曲を作りましたか?
僕は19歳の頃までには、150曲くらいの曲を書いて、そのうち80曲くらいはデモとして録音していました。(当時の録音機材は今とくらべれば質の悪いものでしたが)
なので、これがいわゆる英語で言うところの"Fair Warning"(公平な警告)というやつです。
音楽は、汚い仕事です。
そして、辛い人生です。
確かに警告しましたよ。
もし君が、ここまで書いたこれらのことにもかかわらず、まだ音楽をやろうと言うのであれば、それは君の選択です。
たった今言ったように、もし君が本当のミュージシャンであれば、どんなに自分でそれをやるまいと思っても、結局はやることになるのです。
覚えておいてください。音楽をやめるのが早ければ早いほど、幸せになれます。僕は今までバンドをやる中で、たくさんのバンドの友人に出会ってきました。彼らがバンドをやめるのが早ければ早いほど、彼らは幸せになることができます。それは、ほとんどの友人にたちに当てはまることでした。
2: クリスチャンミュージックを演奏することについて
上に書いた、音楽全般を演奏することについてのアドバイスは、クリスチャンミュージックを演奏する人にも、そうでない人にも当てはまることです。
そしてこれから、クリスチャンミュージックを演奏することについての僕のアドバイスを書きます。
その前に、覚えておいて欲しいのは、これは「教会でワーシップリーダーをやる」とか、そういうのとは違うことだということです。それは違う種類のことだし、アメリカであれどこであれ、教会のミュージシャンとして働くことについては、僕はあまり知りません。(そもそも日本ではそれは職業として成り立たない)。これは、クリスチャンのバンドを結成して、世の中に出ていって音楽を演奏する、ということについてのアドバイスです。
さて、もし君がイエス・キリストへの信仰を持ち、神のために音楽を演奏したいと思っていたとしても、僕のアドバイスは変わりません。すなわち「やめておけ」ということです。
その理由は、上に書いた理由の他に、2つのことがあります。
1. 君の信仰が十分に強くないから
2. 君の音楽が十分に良いものではないから
このふたつです。
君は、自分はイエス様のために音楽をやるのであって、自分のためではない、と言います。
君は、自分はイエス様だけを見ているのであって、自分自身の成功や名声は見ていない、と言います。
それは違います。君は、自分自身の成功と名声を見ています。見ているんです。
それが、僕たち人間の罪というものであり、だからこそ僕たちはジーザスを必要とするんです。
僕たちが皆、罪を持った存在だということを忘れてはいけません。
ただ単に自分クリスチャンだからと言って、自分が潔白だとか、特別だとか思いこんではいけない。
君は、セキュラー(一般)のミュージシャンと同じように汚れているのです。
そのことをしっかり知っておかなければいけません。
君は、その他のミュージシャンと何も変わりはないのです。
このことを知っておかないと、君のいわゆる信仰は、君の強みになるかわりに、君の弱点になってしまうでしょう。
もし君が、自分自身が罪にまみれていている存在であり、自分自身の成功や名声を度々気にかけてしまうとして、それでもイエス様のために音楽をやりたいというのであれば、それは君の選択です。
君は、自分の信仰が強いと思っていますか？
いいえ、強くはありません。
なぜなら、君はクリスチャンミュージシャンであることで、特別な何かを期待しているからです。
君は、教会からの援助を受けられるでしょうか。
いいえ、受けられません。
皆は、君が神のための音楽を演奏していることについて、賞賛するでしょうか。
いいえ、しません。
もし彼らが皆、君のことを賞賛したとしたら、たぶん君は何かのやり方を間違えています。このことについては、気をつけた方がいいと思います。(教会や、クリスチャンの人たちについてです。)
君は、教会からの援助を受けて、人々が賞賛するから、神のための音楽を演奏するのですか？
神様は、それを好みません。
教会やクリスチャンの人々からの援助がなにもなくても、神のための音楽を演奏するというのであれば、たぶん神様は、それをより好きになってくれるでしょう。
僕たちはたぶん、こういった神様からのテストを経験するのです。
覚えておいて下さい。あなたの信念、信仰は試されます。何度も。
では、一般の(secular)ミュージシャン、僕はsecularではなくregularと呼びたいと思っていますが、彼らは自分たちが聖人君子ではないことを知っています。彼らは自分たちがろくでなしであることをわかっています。彼らの人生は誉められたものではありません。彼らは誰から支援を受けているということもありません。けれども、彼らは音楽を演奏し続けています。それはつまり、彼らの音楽への信念、信仰が、君よりも強いということです。
ではもし、君の神に対する信仰、そして音楽に対する信念が、彼ら「一般の」ミュージシャンよりも強いというのであれば、どうぞ出ていって、クリスチャンミュージックを演奏してください！
音楽について話しましょう。
もし君がミュージシャンであるのであれば、音楽というのは最も大切なものです。違いますか？
けれどもクリスチャンの世界では、違った言い方をされることが多いと思います。そして、それはよくないことだと思います。
マタイの福音書の7章16節は、人はそのつける実によって見分けることができると言っています。(マタイの7章15-20を見てみましょう。)
ではミュージシャンにとっての実とは何でしょう。それは音楽です。
だから、もし君がクリスチャンミュージシャンであるのであれば、君は「より良い」実を結ばなくてはいけません。
君は、クリスチャンミュージックが、一般の音楽よりも優れていると思いますか？
本来は、そうあるべきだと思います。
なぜならクリスチャンは、そうでない人たちよりも魂が豊かなはずだからです。
けれども、現実は違いますね。
もちろん、すべての「世俗の」音楽が良いと言っているわけではありません。
けれども、世俗の一般の音楽の方が、より革新的だったり、新しいものがあったり、楽曲も良かったり、サウンドも良かったり、ショウも良かったり、単純に質が高いですね。
これは、よくありません。
これはつまり、僕たちの信仰が十分ではないということだと思います。
僕たちは、普通の日本のハードロックバンドとしてスタートし、その後に、長い音楽的な旅路の末に、クリスチャンバンドになりました。
僕たちは別に、クリスチャンバンドになれば、キャリアの可能性が開かれると思ったからクリスチャンバンドになったわけではありません。
そうではなくて僕たちは、それが新たな音楽的な可能性を開いてくれると思ったから、クリスチャンバンドになったのです。
それは音楽的な理由からくることだったのです。
僕たちは、それが僕たちをより高い音楽レベルに導いてくれると思ったから、クリスチャンミュージックに取り組み始めたのです。
そしてそれは正しい判断でした。キリスト教の信仰は、僕たちの音楽を新しい次元に導いてくれました。(同意してくれるかどうかわかりませんが)
僕たちは単純に、良い音楽を、そしてより良い音楽を、より新しい音楽を演奏したかったのです。今でもそう思っています。
もし僕たちがクリスチャンロックを、音楽的にクールだと思わなければ、僕たちはやらなかったでしょう。
つまり思うのです。
ジミー・ペイジや、エディ・ヴァン・ヘイレンよりもすごいギターリフを、どうやったら作れるか。
そんなことは、ほとんど不可能です。
けれども、キリスト教では、神には不可能はなにひとつない、と言うでしょう。
じゃあ、それを証明してみせてよ！
僕が思うに、これこそがクリスチャンロックというものの意義だと思うのです。
君は、教会とかクリスチャンの間では、U2みたいなチャイム&ディレイのサウンドのギターしか弾くことが許されていない、と感じたことはありませんか。
もしそうであれば、きっと何かが間違っているのです。
クリスチャンミュージシャンは、本来、魂において、一般のミュージシャンよりも自由であるはずです。
けれども、現実にはその逆です。
だとすれば、キリスト教の信仰というものについて、きっと多くの人々は勘違いをしているのです。
もし君が「クリスチャンロックバンド」を始めようというのであれば、君は「一般の」ミュージシャンよりも優れていて、より革新的でなければいけません。
そして一般のミュージシャンよりも魂が自由でなければいけません。
もし君が、よくあるスタイルの音楽をやって、単に歌詞の中にジーザスが出てくるだけの音楽をやるつもりなのであれば、どうか止めてください。お願いだから、止めてください。なぜなら、それは有益なことよりも、害悪にしかならないからです。
もし君が、「より良い」「より新しい」「聴いたことのないような」「最上級の」音楽がやれるというのであれば、どうぞ行って、それをやってください。
僕が思うに、一般の音楽よりも優れた音楽をやるのでなければ、クリスチャンミュージックに意味はありません。

ロックは死んだ？
俺はそうは思わない。
なぜなら、神はロックであり、そして神は生きているから。
そんなことを、いったいクリスチャンロッカー以外の誰が言うことができるでしょうか。
3: 日本で音楽をやることについて
先ほど言ったように、こうしたメールをもらうのは僕は初めてではありません。
必ずしも「音楽を演奏する」ということでなくても、「日本に行って神様のために働きたい」というような内容のメールはよくもらいます。
毎週ってわけではないし、毎月ってわけでもありませんが、2ヶ月に一度くらいは、インターネットのどこかでそういったメッセージをもらいます。
それは良いことです。実際のところ、それは素晴らしいことです。僕はとても嬉しいし、君たちが日本についてそのように情熱と愛を持ってくれることについて、とても嬉しく思います。
けれども、ここでの僕のアドバイスはやはり、「やめておけ」です。
その理由は、上に書いたミュージシャンへのアドバイスとほとんど同じです。
なぜなら、それは君が考えているよりもずっと難しいことだから。
そして、そう、君の信仰が十分に強くないから、です。
日本において神の言葉を広めることは、君が考えている以上に難しいことです。
日本は、キリスト教のミッショナリー(宣教師)にとって、もっとも過酷な場所のひとつなのです。
もし戦う準備が出来ていないのであれば、来るベきではありません。
(そして、音楽の使命と同じように、もし君が本当に神に呼ばれているのであれば、自分自身でどんなに避けようと思っても、君はここに来るでしょう。)
問題は、日本で神の言葉を広めるということは、ほとんどロックスターになるのと同じくらい難しいということです。
人々は、聴いてはくれません。
それは、汚い仕事です。
援助は受けられません。
経済的な問題に直面します。
あなたはきっと「どうして私はこんなことをしているの?」と自問するでしょう。
人々がまったく話を聴いてくれないというわけではありません。また、人々がイエス・キリストの話を理解しないというわけでもありません。これは、それ以前の問題なのです。つまりそれは、社会や文化の背景というものです。
ですから、君の(君の国の)キリスト教を、日本の人々に当てはめることはしないようにしてください。それは、単純にフィットしません。そのかわりに、ちょうどいいサイズの服を選ぶようにして、日本の人たちの日本の人生に合ったキリスト教のスタイルを、一緒に探すようにしてください。
僕のアドバイスのひとつとしては、日本の人たちと、日本の文化に敬意を持ってほしいということです。
イエス・キリストを知っているからといって、自分の方が優れているとは思わないことです。
君は皆と同じです。優れているわけではない。日本の人々がそうであるように、君もまた同じ罪人です。
彼らを教えようと思ってはいけない。
彼らから学んでください。
友達になってください。
おそらく、君は日本の人々の中に、ある種の「神を知る心」を見つけるでしょう。それは、世界の他のどこで見たものとも違うものでしょう。そして、私はそれが日本におけるキリスト教の鍵だと思っています。
わかりません。これを書いていて、私は感情的になってしまいました。もし要点を外れていたらごめんなさい。
けれども、そうですね、それでも君が日本に来て、バンドを結成したいというのであれば、それはそれでいいでしょう。
僕の現実的なアドバイスとしては、バンドや音楽を始めようとする前に、まずはここへ来て、生活を固めることだと思います。
仕事を見つけ、人々と知り合い、文化を学び、友達を作り、ここに生活を根付かせてください。
その後で、バンドを始めることができるでしょう。
日本は外国人にとって、決して、親切な場所ではありません。
つまり、人々はとても親切ですが、政府や、移民制度はあまりオープンではないという話をよく聞きます。
ですからビザの問題があり、君が日本に滞在できるか、どのくらいの期間滞在できるかは、神のみぞ知るという感じだと思います。
日本の女性(男性)と結婚するというなら、それはそれで良いアイディアかもしれませんが、果たしてそれは君が望む人生ですか？
バンドのメンバーを見つけるというのも難しい事です。僕たちはみんな、その点で苦労しています。人々は簡単にバンドを始めたと思うと、簡単に止めてしまったりします。いつでもそういうことは起こります。なので君が、「どうやって日本でバンドメンバーを探したらいいのか？」と聞くのであれば、僕は「さあ、わからない」としか言えません。
けれども、そうですね、もし君が日本に来るというのであれば、お茶でも飲んで、実際に会って面と向かって話すことは出来ます。そうしたら、アドバイスのひとつやふたつはできるでしょう。また僕の友人や、いくつかの教会や牧師に紹介することもできます。
けれども僕も普通の人間であって、ロックスターではありません。僕も自分の人生があり、いつも暇があるわけではありません。それを理解してくれたら、君に会って手助けをすることもできると思います。
日本で音楽をやることについてのもうひとつの「公平な警告」は、音楽をめぐる環境がアメリカなどとはかなり違うということです。
たぶん、日本で音楽をやるということは、かなりお金がかかります。
アメリカでは、バンドの練習するのに、どこかの家のガレージで行うのが一般的だと言いますが、日本にはそういう場所はありません。(日本に来てみればわかります)。練習するにも高価な有料のリハーサルルームを使う必要があります。
また、アメリカではバーで演奏すると、少ないながらも幾ばくのお金をもらえたりしますが、日本ではほとんどの音楽ベニューは高価な"Pay To Play"の場所になります。日本ではそれが普通なのです。最初からたくさんのファンが居ない限りは、30分のショウをやるために$200-400くらいのお金をベニューに支払うことになります。なので、多くの場合、毎週末ギグをやろうぜ、っていう感じではありません。
最近では、僕たちのような善意のインディーズミュージシャンたちによって、少しずつ状況も変わってきています。けれども、日本の音楽をめぐる状況は、アメリカとかヨーロッパとは、いろいろな面でかなり違うということを覚えておいてください。
4: 偶像の罠
最後に、これは神様のために音楽をやるにあたっての、僕のいちばん大事なアドバイスです。
君が、神のために、そして愛のために音楽をやっているんだということを、間違えないでください。
「偶像」のために音楽をやることのないように。
つまり、偶像のために音楽を演奏するということは、それくらい簡単に陥ってしまう罠なのです。
たくさんの人が、自分たちでも気付かないうちにそれをしてしまっていると思います。
君が「神」と言うとき、「愛」と言うとき、それは本当に神ですか？
それとも、「神」とか「愛」と書かれたただの看板、つまり「記号としての愛」ではないですか？
もしそれがただの記号であるならば、それは「偶像」と呼ばれるものです。
知ってのとおり、偶像を崇拝することは罪です。
(僕の友人の一人はそのことを「プラスチックジーザス」と言っていました)
なので、気をつけて、プラスチックの神ではなく、本物の神のために音楽をやるようにしてください。
オーケー。
これが僕のアドバイスです。
そしてこれが、僕の心からのラブレターです。
君の情熱にありがとう。
君の、神様への愛にありがとう。
君が日本に対して抱いている愛にありがとう。
あなたが人生の決断をする中で、神様がどうかあなたを導いてくれますように。
